Enugu to Recruit 2,000 Teachers, Lays off Education Secretaries in Local Government


According to the commissioner for Information in Enugu state, Dr. Godwin Udeuhele, Enugu State Government has retrenched 16 of the 17 Local Government Education Secretaries in the state.
Udeuhele who made this known on Saturday in Enugu said that the decision was taken by the State Executive Council in a meeting held on Friday night.
According to him, the action became necessary to inject fresh ideas and impetus into the administration’s resolve to enhance basic education in the state.
Meanwhile, only the Education Secretary of Awgu Local Government Area, who according to the comissioner, was appointed few months ago, would remain in office.
While speaking, the commissioner said the new development was to enhance and strengthen development of basic education in the state.
However, as part of its efforts to strengthen the sector, the council has approved the recruitment of 2,000 primary school teachers to enhance teaching and learning.
He said: “Those to be employed must have a minimum qualification of National Certificate on Education from recognised institutions.
