Jatau area of Maitumbi, a suburb of Minna, Niger State capital, was thrown into confusion and mourning at the weekend as four persons were electrocuted. Among the victims were the village head of Jatau, his son and a Police Inspector, identified as Abu Gani. According to nationalmirroronline.net, the incident occurred at about 3:48pm, following a spark from high tension cables that passed through the house of the village head.
The spark, it was further learnt, severed the cable, which fell on two houses, and were engulfed in fire. Eyewitness account said Gani, who was attached to Maitunbi Police Station, was on a rescue mission, following calls he received and was caught in the inferno. It was learnt that the village head and one of his sons were the first victims of the fire. The fourth person killed was a friend to the son of the village head, who allegedly met his death while attempting to save his friend. Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state, Bala Elkana, when contacted said three persons were killed, including the inspector, adding that two houses also got burnt.
He explained that the corpses were deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital, Minna, even as investigation into the cause of the spark has commenced. However, at the time of filing this report, the deceased have been buried.
